The divide between the city’s scrappy downtown theater scene and the moneyed uptown institutions can sometimes seem impenetrable. But Lincoln Center Theater’s new LCT3 series was created to bridge that gap. This fall the company opens its season of three productions at the Duke on 42nd Street with What Once We Felt a new play by Ann Marie Healy about a novelist of the future whose book becomes the last to be printed on paper.

Grim parable? Macabre comedy? Naturalist drama? Given that subject matter, it could be any of the above, or a little of all three. Ms. Healy’s quirky comedy Have You Seen Steve Steven, about an oddball family inhabiting a suburban McMansion, was produced by the downtown theater collective 13P.

Directing What Once We Felt is another up-and-comer from the Off and Off Off Broadway world, Ken Rus Schmoll. His work has been seen at places like Performance Space 122 and presented by groups like the Clubbed Thumb company. He directed another notable 13P production, Anne Washburn’s “Internationalist,” which moved to the Vineyard Theater. The cast of What Once We Felt includes Opal Alladin, Mia Barron and Marsha Stephanie Blake.
